Here’s a really positive message of support from North Devon Council, Economic Development and Regeneration
Dear John,
RE: Project at Home Farm, Arlington
It was great to talk through the details of your proposed community hub at Home Farm in Arlington. You have a great collaboration forming with the National Trust for the venue of your hub and lots of interesting groups looking to use such a space. I would like to register my full support for the project and I really hope to see it succeed.
North Devon Council have recently held a heritage construction skills workshop at Arlington Court – using some of the redundant barns near to Home Farm to demonstrate a range of heritage skills to an audience of potential new entrants into these sectors. We have plans to build on this introductory session and it would be fantastic to have a base that we could run these sessions from, in your community hub. Developing industry-led skills development opportunities in a key priority for us.
I am also supportive of the hub being used, in part, as a flexible co-working space. We know that nearly 17% of the working age population in North Devon are self-employed. Following the pandemic, we also still have a large number of people who work from home for at least some of the time during a working week. Having access to facilities that can act as a flexible work base in a rural location would be a valuable asset. This also engenders a collaboration between entrepreneurs and can be an incentive for new business start-ups. This is vital to keep our rural areas productive and open for business.
Finally, providing a base where community activities can take place in such a rural setting can have a hugely positive impact on people’s general health and wellbeing. Encouraging and fostering community cohesion through a range of activities that can provide an outlet for people to socialise and even learn new skills. Arlington has very few community spaces where this type of activity can take place so it would be very welcomed.
I wish you well with your fundraising journey and hope that you are successful. I would like to work with you as the project progresses so please keep me informed.
Best wishes
Dominie
